Keine andere Stadt in Deutschland ist wie Salzgitter. Ein hoher Anspruch, wohl wahr. Salz-
gitter hat vordergründig nur ein einziges Gesicht - das eines Industriestandortes, geprägt
von der Kulisse der Salzgitter AG Stahl und Technologie- unschwer aus allen Himmelsrich-
tungen auszumachen. Aber ist das Salzgitter? Eindeutig: Nein. Typisch ist, dass viele Men-
schen ihre ersten Eindrücke nach einem Kennenlernen schnell korrigieren: Salzgitter ist
mehr; verspricht ungeahnten Reiz, Schönheit und Faszination.
Ein Ökonom sieht in Salzgitter ein
führendes Wirtschaftszentrum in
Norddeutschland mit Stahlproduktion
und Fahrzeugbau. Dem Experten aus
der Kulturszene fallen Stichworte wie
Bildende und Experimentelle Kunst,
klassische Musik, Kleinkunst und
Open Airs ein. Der Historiker wird
von einer „späten Stadt in einer ver-
späteten Nation“ sprechen, die wie
kaum eine andere die deutsche Zeit-
geschichte widerspiegelt. Und für
bundes- und europaweite Schlagzei-
len garantiert Schacht Konrad, das
ehemalige Erzbergwerk, das in der
Landschaft nicht zu übersehen ist
und mögliches Endlager für schwach-
bis mittelradioaktive Abfälle wird.
There is no other city in Germany quite like Salzgitter. A sweeping statement – but a true
one. On the face of it, Salzgitter is an industrial city identified primarily with its name-
sake, the steel and technology specialist Salzgitter AG, whose presence is visible from far
and wide. But is that all there is to Salzgitter? Most definitely not. And most people are
usually quick to revise their first impressions once they know us better: Salzgitter is much
more. It is a haven of unimagined charm, beauty and fascination.
To an economist, Salzgitter is a leading industrial hub in northern Germany, a centre of
steel production and motor manufacturing. Connoisseurs of the cultural scene know it as
a focus of fine arts and artistic experimentation, of classical music, cabaret and open-air
festivals. A historian might be tempted to speak of a “late-born city in a nation late to find
itself”, and one which reflects contemporary German history like no other. One unmistak-
able feature of the local landscape, the former mineral ore mine Schacht Konrad, has
made headlines nationwide and across Europe as a potential repository for low- to
medium-level radioactive waste.
