saur, an ichthyosaur which lived in the Early Cretaceous Period
115 million years ago, the skeleton of which was discovered in
1941 in the early days of deep mineral ore mining in Salzgitter. A
large collection of toys dating from the 19th and 20th centuries
are displayed in the “Museum of the History of Childhood” which
seeks to provide an insight into the lives of children in the region.
The byre which once housed the Salder estate‘s cows has been
transformed into the art gallery of the City of Salzgitter. Exhibi-
tions on the theme of the working world are regularly held here
featuring works from the city’s collection, as well as displays of
modern art. A highlight each year is the Salon Salder, which
presents works by artists in Lower Saxony. The regularly changing
exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Kuhstall are complemented by a
permanent outdoor display of sculptures and objets d’art by na-
tionally and internationally renowned sculptors. This KUNSTüber-
all programme – literally, “art everywhere” – has attracted atten-
tion both throughout Germany and abroad. The KUNSTüberall
collection of carefully selected works displayed in the public do-
main is steadily being expanded. Sculptures in a variety of materi-
als by well-known German and foreign artists are on exhibit at a
number of different locations.
As the title “Museums Festival” implies, Salzgitter likes to cel-
ebrate. In the summer months, the weekends are taken up with
traditional fairs and local festivals, one of the most popular of
which is the Seefest, the Festival on the Lake. However, the high-
light is without doubt the Altstadtfest, the Old Town Festival,
which attracts people of all generations from far and wide. For
many it offers a welcome opportunity to revisit their home town,
family and friends, and for locals it provides a venue to meet up
with former Salzgitter inhabitants who have been scattered to the
winds.
Two important players on the cultural
scene are the Städtische Volkshochschule
(VHS) and the Musikschule. For book-
worms, the main focus of interest is the
central Municipal Library in Lebenstedt
and its branches in Salzgitter-Bad and in
the residential district of Fredenberg. In
addition to lending books and video cas-
settes, the Municipal Library also hosts a
popular series of readings and exhibitions
which have earned it some outstanding
rankings on a national scale.

nach andernorts verschlagen hat.
Wichtige Faktoren der Kulturszene sind die Städtische Volkshochschule (VHS)
und die Musikschule. Zentrum für Leseratten ist die Stadtbibliothek mit ihrem
zentralen Gebäude in Lebenstedt sowie Nebenstellen in Salzgitter-Bad und im
Wohngebiet Fredenberg. Neben der Ausleihe vom Buch bis zur Videokassette
erfreut sich die Stadtbibliothek mit Lesungen und Ausstellungen großer Beliebt-
heit. Im nationalen Leistungsvergleich belegt sie hervorragende Plätze.
