What, in your opinion, are the assets this city has which are of benefit to th
who live here?
Next to a significant number of jobs in the automotive industry, the extensive
range of cultural and educational institutions are definitely an asset. But wha
even more striking, in my view, is Wolfburg’s unique location in the very centr
a reunified Germany, and its excellent transport connections. This can surely
exploited to the benefit of the economic policy of the city, which quite rightly
makes every effort to get away from the monoculture of its early years.
What, in your view, are the future options of those who live in Wolfsburg?
People all over the world are faced with the challenge of adjusting to economic
conditions that are changing with ever increasing speed. This trend is not likel
by-pass cities like Wolfsburg. Education, professional and vocational training
the keys to success. Solidarity is important – and an atmosphere that fosters
creativity and encourages new ideas. I feel that Wolfsburg is highly capable of
coping with these challenges.
Wolfsburg versteht sich als Familien-, als „Wohlfühlstadt“. Welche Vorzüge bietet
Wolfsburg Ihrer Meinung nach den Menschen, die hier zu Hause sind?
Neben einer beträchtlichen Zahl von Arbeitsplätzen in der Autoindustrie auf
jeden Fall ein großes Angebot an kulturellen und Bildungseinrichtungen. Was
mir besonders ins Auge sticht, ist aber die einzigartig zentrale Lage Wolfsburgs
im vereinten Deutschland und sind die entsprechenden hervorragenden Ver-
kehrsverbindungen. Dies kann man sicherlich auch für die Wirtschaftspolitik
der Stadt nutzbar machen, die ja zu Recht erfolgreiche Anstrengungen unter-
nimmt, die ursprünglich vorgegebene Monokultur anzureichern.
Welche Zukunftsperspektiven sehen Sie für die Menschen in Wolfsburg?
Überall auf der Welt stehen heute die Menschen vor der Herausforderung, sich
an wirtschaftliche Verhältnisse anzupassen, die sich immer schneller verändern.
Das wird Städte wie Wolfsburg nicht aussparen. Bildung und Ausbildung sind
die Schlüssel zum Erfolg. Sozialer Zusammenhalt ist wichtig – und eine Atmo-
sphäre, die Kreativität und immer wieder neue Ideen begünstigt. Für all diese
Herausforderungen scheint mir Wolfsburg in hohem Maß befähigt.
