Apropos Schloss Salder: Stolze 400 Jahre ist es alt, das Städtische Museum. Ab
1608 wurde es im Stil der Weserrenaissance erbaut. Seit dem frühen Mittelalter
war auf einem älteren Gutshof die Familie von Saldern, ein uraltes Geschlecht im
Herzogtum Braunschweig, ansässig, die um 1600 in Gebiete östlich der Elbe
auswanderte. Ein berühmter Besucher trug sich 1641 in die „Gästeliste“ des
Hauses ein. In jenem Jahr lag Piccolimini, Feldherr der Katholischen Liga im
Dreißigjährigen Krieg, mit berittenen Truppen im Schloss und im Gutshof Salder.
1695 kaufte Erbprinz August Wilhelm, Sohn von Herzog Anton Ulrich von Braun-
schweig-Wolfenbüttel, Schloss Salder und erneuerte es grundlegend. Seit 1955
befindet es sich im Besitz der Stadt Salzgitter, die 1962 in ihm das Städtische

Museum is now 400 years old. It was built from 1608 in the Weser
Renaissance style. The von Salder family, an ancient lineage in the
Duchy of Brunswick, had occupied an older estate on the site since
medieval times, before moving to lands east of the Elbe around
1600. A famous visitor to the house in 1641 was none other than
Piccolimini, commander of the Catholic League in the Thirty Years
War, who occupied the palace and estate with his cavalry.
In 1695, Schloss Salder was bought by Prince August Wilhelm, son
of Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, who carried out a
thorough renovation. Since 1955 it has been owned by the City of
Salzgitter. The Municipal Museum was established in 1962 and re-
opened to the public following renovation and restoration in 1981.
The Schloss in fact comprises three museums. The “Museum of
Municipal History” takes the visitor on a journey from the earliest
geological beginnings via the prehistoric era, the Middle Ages and
modern times to the development of the city in the 20th century.
The “Museum of Industry, Technology, Labour and Mobility” de-
picts the industrial and technological history of Salzgitter and the
region between the Harz and the Heath since the 19th century.
